School Improvement

Writing Improvement
Teachers at St. Charles School are using the 6 + 1 Traits of writing in the classroom in an effort to improve student writing across the curriculum.

The 6 + 1 Traits are:  ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, conventions, & presentation.

For more information on the 6 + 1 Traits please visit this page.

To further improve writing skills, each grade level at St. Charles studies commonly used English words. The first grade studies the first one hundred most commonly used words, the second grade studies the first 200, and so on. The eighth grade studies all 1,000. These words can be found online at here.

St. Charles Catholic School is fully accredited by the Archdiocese of Indianapolis and the State of Indiana. St. Charles is committed to school improvement and the process of school improvement is ongoing. It involves the identification of strengths and weaknesses for all subject areas based on teacher evaluation, student performance, and parent survey responses. Subsequently goals and action plans for improvement are developed.

Based on the evaluation process, our current school improvement plan (2008-2011) has three main goals (click for detailed information):

  • All students will increase their knowledge and awareness of the Catholic Social Teachings.

  • All students will show improvement in writing across the curriculum. (See box to the right.)

  • The clergy, school board, and school will work collaboratively to increase school enrollment of St. Charles School through retention of current students and recruitment of new students.

The 2008-2011 school improvement committee consists of administrators, teachers, parents and parish members. The school improvement committee works closely with clergy and the Board of Education in order to reach our goals. The entire plan can be found at the Archdiocese of Indianapolis
