Academic Needs

As declared in our mission statement the faculty and staff of St. Charles are dedicated to meeting the unique educational needs of each of our students. Classes are grouped heterogeneously, so that all students may feel a natural part of our school community. If students are identified through formal testing as having special needs, remediation is given individually or in small groups either during or outside of regular school hours.

If it seems in the student’s best interest, certain aspects of the curriculum and of the grading system may be adjusted when necessary. At the same time, the need for the students to assume responsibility for learning and to maintain their best effort is stressed. Records are kept of all adjustments and of the students’ progress. This progress is regularly assessed and discussed at meetings between teachers and parents during the course of the school year. Students are included in these meetings when it is felt to be of benefit to them.

Assessment tools determine Reading and Math groupings. There are many opportunities for gifted and talented students to work creatively at St. Charles. In addition to the resource and inclusion teachers who help provide enrichment for students in kindergarten through grade five, classroom teachers endeavor to provide activities and projects in all core areas that are stimulating to students’ interests and completed at their particular level of ability and understanding. Math tracking is begun in grade five and continues in grades six through eight.
