The magical month of December is behind us and we are starting 2012 with lots of enthusiasm and energy. December started with a week of the Nativity story with many opportunities to learn about giving and sharing and the love that Jesus brings to our lives. The preschoolers can tell you the story of Christmas and also understand that the true meaning of Christmas is that Christmas is for giving, not just for getting. We participated in our all school food drive, collected baby items for the Crisis Pregnancy Center, and made holiday decorations and Christmas caroled at Bell Trace Nursing Center. We made presents and cards for parents and reading buddies and sang traditional religious songs to celebrate the season. Our Advent candles were lit every week with prayers to go along with the lighting.
Santa, Rudolph, candy canes, stockings, gingerbread cookies, parties and more rounded out the glorious season of Christmas. Of course in the middle of all those fun themes, lots of early learning skills accompanied the activities. Wonderful stories and songs filled the air as we laughed and celebrated up until December 16th.
January finds us welcoming the New Year, reading winter stories, spending a week on service projects, learning about Polar Bears and Penguins, understanding who Dr. Martin Luther King was and his message of peace, justice, and equality for all people. Our famous International Celebration of We Are One World finishes the month of January as many parents come into the classroom sharing cultural artifacts and languages and clothing with us. It all ends with an international tasting fair.
The cold winds may be blowing outside, but the warmth of laughter and learning is abundant in St. Charles Preschool.
